Fusarium and Verticillium Wilt: Diagnosis and Management

Fusarium and verticillium wilt are the diseases gardeners least like to diagnose, because there's no spray that fixes them. They're soil-borne fungi that invade a plant's water-conducting tissue and choke it from the inside, and by the time the symptoms are obvious the plant can't be saved. The good news is that they're manageable over the long term, through resistant varieties, rotation, and sanitation, once you can recognize them and tell them apart from simpler problems.

How to recognize fusarium and verticillium wilt

Both fungi clog the plant's internal plumbing, so the signature is wilting that doesn't recover overnight even though the soil is moist, distinct from the temporary afternoon droop of heat stress. Classic tells:

Don't confuse them with faster killers

A plant that wilts and collapses suddenly, over a day or two, is more likely bacterial wilt spread by cucumber beetles (in cucurbits) or a squash vine borer tunneling the stem — not these slow fungal wilts. And simple water stress or overwatering causes wilting that recovers when conditions improve. The brown internal streaking and the slow, one-sided decline are what point specifically to fusarium or verticillium.

There's no cure — so manage the soil

Once a plant is infected, remove and dispose of it (don't compost it) to limit the fungus spreading, because the spores persist in the soil for years. From there it's all prevention:
