Why Are My Cucumber Leaves Turning Yellow?

GardenDraft Team · July 9, 2026 · 5 min read

Part of: Plant Problems & Pest Guides

Yellowing cucumber leaves are one of the most common mid-summer worries, and the cause is usually something simple (feeding, watering, or a treatable pest) not a death sentence. The trick is to read which leaves are yellowing and how, because the pattern points straight at the cause. Work down this triage from the top; it's ordered by likelihood.

The 60-second triage

What you seeMost likely causeSerious?

Feeding and watering: the usual suspects

Cucumbers are hungry, fast-growing plants, and the most common yellowing is simple nitrogen hunger: the oldest leaves go uniformly pale first as the plant moves nitrogen to new growth. A balanced feed greens it back up. Just as common is water trouble, and it cuts both ways: cucumbers need steady moisture, but waterlogged, poorly drained soil suffocates the roots and yellows the leaves just as drought does. Aim for consistent, deep watering and mulch to even it out, rather than frequent splashes.

Pests that turn cucumber leaves yellow

Two pests show up as yellowing. Spider mites thrive in hot, dry spells and stipple leaves with tiny yellow dots, often with fine webbing underneath (covered in controlling spider mites). More serious are cucumber beetles, which spread bacterial wilt: if whole vines wilt and yellow and collapse without recovering, that's likely bacterial wilt, and the real fix is stopping the beetles early. Aphids and whiteflies can also sap vigor and yellow foliage.

Disease, and when not to worry

Cucurbits are prone to two mildews: downy mildew (angular yellow patches with fuzzy growth beneath) and powdery mildew (white dust that yellows leaves as it spreads). A mottled, distorted yellow-green pattern on new growth points to mosaic virus, which has no cure; remove affected plants. Finally, don't over-react to a few old lower leaves yellowing late in the season: that's normal aging as the plant pours energy into fruit. Plan healthy cucumbers from the start on the planting calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Should I cut off yellow cucumber leaves?
Remove leaves that are badly yellowed, diseased (mildew, mottling), or pest-damaged, since they won't recover and can spread problems. A few old lower leaves yellowing naturally at season's end can be left or tidied — that's normal aging, not a problem.
Can overwatering turn cucumber leaves yellow?
Yes. Cucumbers need steady moisture but waterlogged, poorly drained soil suffocates the roots and yellows the leaves just as drought does. Water deeply but let excess drain, and mulch to keep moisture even rather than swinging wet to dry.
