How to Design Your First Garden Bed

3 min read · Updated July 6, 2026

Beds are the containers everything else lives in — add one before placing plants.

Add a bed

  1. Open your garden's workspace and click + New bed.
  2. Pick a bed type: Raised, In-ground, or Container. Raised and container beds also take a Height (the frame depth); in-ground beds don't.
  3. Pick a shape: Rectangle or Oval. In oval beds, plants can sit closer to the curved edge.
  4. Enter Width and Length. Each dimension must be between 6 inches and 50 feet. Use the unit selector to switch between feet/inches and meters/centimeters.
  5. Optionally name the bed. Left blank, GardenDraft auto-numbers it — "Raised bed #2" and so on.
  6. Submit, and the bed appears on your plan.

Edit or remove a bed

Select a bed on the Layout tab to move or modify it. Delete or Backspace removes the selected bed — you'll be asked to confirm, since bed deletion can't be undone. To duplicate a bed — plants and all — see How to copy a bed and everything in it.
